I've had this item for some time now and decided it was time to write a short article on it to go alongside the article I wrote on the Code 3 Dinky Antar Wrecker.
Again I cannot remember when I got it but I do get interested in this type of modified toy. I am not the builder of this Code 3 model - the donor model has been a 642 RAF Pressure Refueller unit from Dinky that has been modified and enhanced in several ways.
1. The body has been stripped and repainted - this is pretty obvious as it now sports the colour scheme of Pickfords together with appropriate signage. The paint job is a bit rough as it has been done by hand and in certain light you can see the brush marks but the item still displays very well.
2. A flat bed deck with low sides has been added to the rear and on this sits a crane rig, mounted over the original twin axles at the rear. I can't say for certain if this has come from another donor model but it looks like it has - possibly from a later Matchbox Kingsize model given the plastic hook and "Wire". The rear of the vehicle has had little else done to it.
3. Enhancements have then been added to the body work - a small chrome spotlight has been added to the rear of the cab, wing mirrors have been added on each side of the cab, the spare wheel has been mounted at the rear of the flat bed below the crane jib and a heavy duty towing bar lies on the bed of the vehicle together with some loose chain. Little else appears to have been done to the vehicle apart from the addition of number plates to the front and rear.
Although the whole item is again somewhat fragile, it also managed to make it from the UK to me in one piece!
